Cryogenics Engineer (Job Number:433807)
Job Description:
The Technical SETA will assist the USG PM in executing a research program that intends to develop technologies that will enable energy:efficient high data:rate interconnect between a superconducting data processor at 4 kelvins and a room temperature control system. The research program is primarily interested in components for the data egress system from the 4 kelvins environment.
The superconducting system represents digital zeros and ones by either the absence or presence of a single flux quantum (SFQ). SFQ circuits produce voltage pulses that are about 1 mV tall and 2 picoseconds wide. Each pulse can to some extent be made to carry a different amount of current, but values in the microamperes range are typical. These data:bit pulses will need to be converted into a form that is suitable for transmission to room temperature. The program goal is for the 4 kelvins energy dissipation per transmitted bit to be no more than tens of attojoules. The data ingress system will need to have comparable efficiency. The research hopes to identify solutions that can be scaled to beyond petabits per second.
Responsibilities include:
Independent analysis of the performers technical deliverables and publications.
Assistance with testing and evaluation experiments.
Literature searches and independent review and summary of findings.
Continuous survey and summarization of relevant government, academic and contracted research.
Preparation of drafts of briefings and reports for the program.
Management and tracking of the program data products.
Aggregation, review and tracking of performers publications.
Required Education and Experience:
: PhD degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering with at least two (2) years of post:graduate laboratory experience. Candidates with a masters degree may be considered if work experience and achievements demonstrate deep technical understanding and evidence of problem solving capability.
: Technical familiarity with the various current research approaches to advanced electro optic modulator development; including an understanding of the effects that lowering temperature has on the relevant physical phenomena governing the function of these devices and on the performance of these devices.
: Experience in performance modeling of electro:optic communication systems.
: Familiarity with room temperature interconnect and packaging of devices for electro: optic communication systems and integrated optical systems.
: Ability to proactively manage multiple concurrent tasks.
: Ability to work constructively in a team environment.
: Understanding of advanced communication modulation schemes including WDM and homodyne optical detection.
: Ability to obtain a security clearance
Desired Skills:
: General cryogenic engineering and cryogenic packaging.
: Cryogenic packaging of fiber optic devices, components and systems.
